Background
This product is an unconjugated, non-therapeutic recombinant analog of pexelizumab, an anti-complement-C5 agent, supplied for research use only. It reproduces the binding specificity of the originator, which recognizes human complement component C5 (UniProt P01031) and blocks its cleavage by C5 convertases. It is a single-chain variable fragment (scFv) format, not the clinical drug, and is not intended for human or veterinary use. Because it targets C5 at the point where the terminal complement pathway is activated, it is a useful reference tool for interrogating complement biology, benchmarking neutralization assays, and developing or validating other anti-C5 binders. Researchers use it as a positive control in binding and functional-blocking experiments, for epitope and competition studies, and as a standardized reagent in preclinical and in-vitro complement models. It is offered at research grade with low endotoxin (typically less than 1 EU/mg, with an ultra-low option below 0.5 EU/mg) and is available in bulk milligram-to-gram quantities to support assay development, screening campaigns, and scale-dependent workflows.
Complement component C5 (UniProt P01031) is a central protein of the terminal complement pathway. It is cleaved by C5 convertases into two fragments with distinct roles. C5a is a potent anaphylatoxin and chemoattractant that recruits and activates neutrophils, monocytes, and other immune cells through the C5a receptor, driving inflammation. C5b initiates assembly of the membrane attack complex (C5b-9) by nucleating sequential binding of C6, C7, C8, and multiple C9 molecules, forming a lytic pore in target membranes. By acting at C5, agents that block its cleavage suppress both the pro-inflammatory C5a axis and the cytolytic terminal pathway while leaving upstream opsonization by C3b largely intact. Dysregulated C5 activity is implicated in a range of complement-mediated pathologies, making C5 a well-validated node for mechanistic study.
