Background
Complement component 5 (C5) sits at the convergence point of the terminal complement cascade and is a longstanding target in inflammation and complement-mediated disease research. This research-grade product is an unconjugated, non-therapeutic recombinant analog of olendalizumab, built around human C5 (UniProt P01031) on a hybrid IgG2/IgG4 kappa framework. It is not the clinical drug and is not intended for human or veterinary use. Released strictly for research use only (RUO), it is manufactured to demanding in vivo standards in a low-endotoxin format (research grade under 1 EU/mg; ultra-low options under 0.5 EU/mg) and supplied in scalable milligram (mg) to gram (g) quantities to serve heavy-usage, high-throughput laboratories. It serves as a dependable positive control and active neutralising reagent for complement-inhibition assays, functional hemolytic readouts, epitope and binding characterisation, and preclinical inflammatory-disease models. Uniform, lot-to-lot consistent quality supports confident comparisons across long-running projects and reproducible benchmarking against other terminal-complement inhibitors. C5 (complement component 5, UniProt P01031) is a large plasma glycoprotein and the pivotal effector of the terminal complement pathway. Convertases generated by the classical, lectin, and alternative pathways cleave C5 into C5a and C5b. C5a is a potent anaphylatoxin and chemoattractant that signals through the C5aR1 and C5aR2 receptors to drive neutrophil recruitment, vascular permeability, and pro-inflammatory activation. C5b nucleates assembly of the membrane attack complex (C5b-9), which forms lytic transmembrane pores that damage or lyse target cells. Because C5 acts downstream of the three initiating pathways yet upstream of both anaphylatoxin release and MAC formation, blocking C5 cleavage neutralises terminal complement activity while leaving upstream opsonisation via C3b largely intact, making C5 a central node for studying complement-driven tissue injury.
