Background
This product is an unconjugated, non-therapeutic research-grade analog of altumomab, supplied for laboratory use only and not for clinical or diagnostic application. Altumomab is a murine-derived monoclonal antibody directed against carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA/CEACAM5). In its historical clinical form it was radiolabeled as indium-111 altumomab pentetate and evaluated as a radioimmunodetection agent for colorectal cancer, though it was never approved for marketing. The ichor.bio biosimilar reproduces the antigen-binding specificity of the originator built around the CEACAM5 target, but is provided without any radionuclide, chelator, or other conjugate, allowing investigators to study the underlying antibody-antigen interaction directly. It is manufactured at research grade with low endotoxin (<1 EU/mg) and is available in bulk milligram-to-gram quantities, making it suitable as a reference standard, positive control, or binding reagent. Because it is an analog rather than the clinical drug, it should be used to interrogate CEA biology and antibody behavior in vitro rather than as a substitute for any approved product.
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), formally CEACAM5 (CD66e), is a heavily glycosylated, GPI-anchored cell-surface glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily and a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule family. Encoded by the CEACAM5 gene, it mediates homotypic and heterotypic cell-cell adhesion and can modulate cell polarity, differentiation, and anoikis resistance. CEACAM5 is normally expressed on the apical surface of gastrointestinal epithelium during fetal development and at lower levels in adult colonic mucosa. It is markedly overexpressed and aberrantly distributed in many carcinomas, including the large majority of colorectal, gastric, and pancreatic cancers as well as a substantial fraction of lung and breast tumors. This tumor-associated overexpression, together with its shed soluble form used as a serum tumor marker, has made CEACAM5 a longstanding target for imaging, antibody-based diagnostics, and therapeutic development.
