Background
ICH5401 is a research-grade biosimilar of Bifarcept, supplied by ichor.bio as an unconjugated, non-therapeutic analog intended for research use only. It is not a clinical drug and is not for human or veterinary use. Bifarcept is a biologic built around interferon alpha-1 (IFNA1), the cytokine encoded by the gene corresponding to UniProt entry P0DY56 (IFNA1_HUMAN). This reagent is offered as a standardized comparator/analog for laboratory work rather than as a therapeutic. Note that publicly available descriptions of Bifarcept vary: some sources list its target simply as interferon alpha-1, while others describe it as a type I interferon-receptor-directed construct; ichor.bio should confirm the exact molecular format and intended target against its own source material. As a research-grade preparation it is manufactured to defined quality specifications (research-grade endotoxin, typically under 1 EU/mg) and can be supplied at bulk milligram-to-gram scale for reproducible in-vitro and functional studies. Because the associated target is a soluble human cytokine rather than a cell-surface antigen, the product is positioned for binding, neutralization, and assay-standardization applications rather than antibody-style depletion or checkpoint studies. Interferon alpha-1 (IFNA1; also known as IFN-alpha-D or LeIF D; UniProt P0DY56) is a member of the type I interferon family of secreted signaling proteins. Type I interferons are central to innate antiviral defense and immunomodulation. Secreted IFN-alpha binds the shared type I interferon receptor, composed of the IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits. Receptor engagement and dimerization activate the receptor-associated JAK tyrosine kinases, leading to phosphorylation of STAT1 and STAT2; these, with IRF9, assemble into the ISGF3 complex that drives transcription of interferon-stimulated genes. The resulting program induces antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunoregulatory effects, including modulation of NK-cell and T-cell responses and upregulation of MHC. Because IFNA1 is a soluble ligand rather than a membrane antigen, reagents built around it are used to probe or standardize this cytokine axis.
