Background
This product is an unconjugated, non-therapeutic recombinant analog of belimumab, a fully human IgG1-lambda antibody directed against soluble human BAFF (B-cell activating factor, also called BLyS/TNFSF13B). It is supplied for research use only and is not the clinical drug; it is not intended for human or veterinary use. Built around the BAFF target, it is useful as a well-defined binding and neutralization reagent for interrogating the BAFF-BAFF receptor axis in vitro. Typical research applications include positive/reference controls in ligand-binding and blocking assays, characterization of BAFF-dependent B-cell survival signaling, benchmarking of novel anti-BAFF binders, epitope and affinity comparisons, and as a tool antibody in preclinical assay development including ADCC/ADC and reporter-based formats. The material is produced at research grade with low endotoxin (typically <1 EU/mg, with an ultra-low <0.5 EU/mg option) and is available in bulk milligram-to-gram quantities to support screening, standardization, and scale-up workflows without therapeutic-grade cost or regulatory constraints.
BAFF (B-cell activating factor; also known as BLyS, TALL-1, TNFSF13B; UniProt Q9Y275) is a type II transmembrane member of the TNF superfamily expressed by myeloid cells, dendritic cells, and stromal cells. It is cleaved from the membrane to a soluble form that assembles into trimers (and higher-order 60-mer structures) and signals through three receptors on B cells: BAFF-R (TNFRSF13C), TACI (TNFRSF13B), and BCMA (TNFRSF17). BAFF is a key survival and maturation factor for transitional and mature B cells, promoting peripheral B-cell homeostasis, and it also supports plasma cell survival and immunoglobulin class switching. A related ligand, APRIL, shares TACI and BCMA. Excess BAFF drives survival of autoreactive B cells and is implicated in systemic lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune disease, which is the rationale for therapeutic BAFF neutralization.
